Spring Track Event at TGPR

Post by DelanieC » Fri Feb 12, 2016 11:00 pm

Registration is now open for AL and TVR regions' Spring Track Event April 9-10 at Talladega Gran Prix Raceway! This event includes Time Trial competition and our Time Trial School which can take you from a Novice Permit to a full SCCA Time Trial License in one weekend.

It also includes Track Time (PDX) with in-car and classroom instruction provided at no additional cost. Most street cars are eligible to run in our PDX run groups with no additional modifications, you just need a helmet rated SA2000 or M2000 or better (so, autocrossers, you probably already have everything you need!). Convertible vehicles operating with a factory roll over protection system are allowable. Other convertibles must have either a factory hardtop OR a 4 point roll bar. If a roll bar is used, it must meet the roll bar requirements found in the Time Trials Rules. Otherwise, we run our PDX like any other track day...

So, here's what makes this event the best kept secret in Track Days: By Sunday afternoon all the guys competing in our Time Trial groups have decided they can't improve their times , they're worn out or need to get home to feed their dog.... who knows! But they all pack up and head home and that means you get all the track time you can handle!

Dear God, what a fun weekend!

I got about two hours of track time, and that's with missing a session on Saturday (burned through all of the fuel I had on hand) and leaving at lunch on Sunday (out of brakes and just plain exhausted!) Alabama and Tennessee Valley Regions did a great job of organizing and keeping things moving, and did so with a welcoming smile. Track management is also friendly and easy to work with. Got to see several old friends and meet a few new ones. The weekend just had a "racing family" feel to it.

The new track configuration flows really well and I found it had a much more natural rhythm than the old layout. The track is now counter-clockwise and a bit longer than before. You use about a third of the skid pad, instead of the two thirds you used to use, and it now makes for a nice fast launch onto the "Cornfield Straight". At the end of that is a fun left-right-left wiggly bit that leads onto the front straight and past start finish. Turn one (the south-west corner of the track) is now tighter than it used to be but it is still fourth gear all the way through. The infield is the same as it was, only backwards.

The new Barbeque vendor serves great food, they have reasonable prices, and they don't skimp on the portions.

Thanks to Dave and Gail Hester for working F&C and thank you to everyone who worked to make this event happen!

Good to hear you were back in the saddle. I enjoyed Little T. in the HP Honda. Fun place.
