Lot Search

Obviously we have had this discussion before but we really need a place that we can hold our events. But before just throwing every empty parking lot in the world as a suggestion, there are some things to consider.

1. A minimum of 200,000 square feet of usable space. This can be measured using google maps. I will be happy to measure them :)
2. Little to no "greenspace" or light poles. Clearly we can work courses around some obstacles but the fewer the better.
3. Needs to not see a lot of traffic on the weekend

If you know of a place and would like me to look at it, get me an address or GPS coordinates. I like to think that I know my way around pretty well but I don't know where everything is and an address or coordinates will make it easier.

Thanks for your help!

Yes, and going back is an option we're considering. But if there's better out there, we'd like to know.

Do you all think we should pursue Walker Valley for our immediate needs to keep the season rolling? I feel that if we miss several more events, it will be that much harder to keep participation numbers and momentum up even if and when we find a new venue. And no fault of you all, but I haven't raced yet this year & its driving me nuts!!

I was discussing it with RJ some last night and I think that the closer we can get to Chattanooga for a lot the better. I realize that is much easier said than done. I just feel like in our move to Cleveland, while it's a much better lot than Eastgate, and where I now live, saw the end or at least major decline of out-of-region participation. I know its not really that much farther, and there's only been a few events to base this on, but it seems like we rarely see TVR, TR, ATL show up anymore and I fear that's due to the "longer" drive. I feel like ETR is our best and maybe only shot at getting out of towners.

Just some thoughts I had, may just be my perception, and I'll help where I can. The Facebook post about Cleveland speedway having room for RallyX has me thinking we should pursue some of that! I know the guy at the kart track in Niota is willing to host RallyX with anyone but ETR also. Maybe a quarterly RallyX event in CRSCCA?????

Justin, Everyone agrees with the need to find another site very quickly. I share the same concern that missing more than one month may potentially be a catastrophe for the numbers. I'm not sure Walker Valley is available while school is till in session even though we run on Sunday.

Ridgeland High School was just presented in the lot search thread and that looks very interesting. This afternoon I'm going to consolidate all the suggestions and measure them.

Are we / do we have a lot search 'team' who will contact the whomevers at where-evers to see if we can rent?

Ok so here are specs on what we've had suggested so far, for reference the Jet port is about 185,000 sq ft of usable space:
Walker Valley High 95,400 sq ft
Ridgeland High School 185,000 sq ft
Old K-Mart on 153 103,640 sq ft
Chattanooga Auto Auction 231,000 sq ft
Bradley Central 111,500 sq ft
Magic Chef plant? 95,200 sq ft
Dade County High 94,000 sq ft
Hardwick Field around 190,000 sq ft

I'd say jump all over Ridgeland then, first.

IIRC, Ridgeland is football crazy so one approach to them might be to suggest that the fees paid to use their lot could go toward their sports program(s).

Update on Lots:
Ridgeland High School 185,000 sq ft Since the satelite photos were updated last, the lot has been chopped up with light poles and curbs. Unusable now
Old K-Mart on 153 103,640 sq ft small and we would lose a lot more to traffic for Home depot and Verizon.
Bradley Central 111,500 sq ft Surface has aged too much and is too rough to use.
Hardwick Field around 190,000 sq ft Still possible but the layout would limit design options but still usable.

Is Dade viable? I went by. Wow, small...small. I am not sure it could support 55+ entries and courses would be mid 20's at best.

Re: Lot Search

by drjeffapp
I know as a club we ran there in the past. The cost was low enough that 55+ entries would not be really needed to turn a profit. I only ran there myself once or twice and I suffer from CRS so I honestly don't remember the lot. Speaking to others, it was (always?) a 2 lapper.
I think we need to get somewhere, somehow, and soon. Even if it's only for a few events.

Yeah, Dade was always a 2-lapper or figure 8 or something like that. The surface isn't anything special, but at least there's room for grid and paddock without eating into any of the racing surface. I recall we got an occasional noise complaint, so we'd probably have to reinstitute our sound policy there. I have no idea how many entries we ever had there. Probably 50-ish tops, but I've been wrong before. I wouldn't expect to draw much of the ETR crowd if we run down there again, but we might get a few more from Huntsville.

There are food options close by, which is a plus.

Has anyone contacted Chattanooga Auto Auction? The lot is huge but seems to have cars parked in it most of the time. I think it would be a good option though...

A couple of new possibilities!
Old Bi-Lo 4825 Dayton Blvd 143,300 sq ft room for grid and paddock outside of this area
Hardwick Clothes in Cleveland(owned by AJ) 175,000 sq ft only 10,000 sq ft less than Cleveland Jet Port also possible grid and paddock outside of this area

I used to live down the street from that Bi-lo. The lot from what I remember isn't all that great, you can actually see a lot of damage from google satellite map if you zoom in (the lot floods if it rains very much). Also there are a bunch of old people that live right across the street. Think: "get off my lawn!" On a good note, there is a firehouse next door if we ever had any accidents. Red Bank police are pretty cool, but there is a good chance that they would attempt to pull everyone over both coming to and leaving events unless they've seen that particular car driving through before. I was actually pulled over shortly after moving there and the cop told me that he just wanted to know who I was driving through his town. They're all straight out of Mayberry. Rumor has it that they actually fill out paperwork in the office with crayons....But they would probably be down for a Cop Shootout format like we used to do in Dade.

I drove through the Hardwick clothes lot a few minutes ago. It's definitely a no go. The lot is hella rough. Two major bumps in it that would devastate a car at any sort of speed. Also, there are 5 or 6 sewer drains in it that create some serious bumps. One of the bumps goes the length of the lot and my Miata bottomed out going around 30 mph.

Just went by the Dayton blvd lot and it's not great but not any worse than eastgate. A few areas to avoid and some of the lot could be used near the buildings since there are speed bumps but it's workable.

What about the parking lot of the closed K-Mart on Highway 58? I know they have car shows there occasionally, and I use it often to teach friends how to drive stick.

I believe they have a church there on Sunday, I could be wrong though. If any can confirm or deny that information it would be great!

I know that Zaxbys is open and will need to be given some space as well. I'm not sure if we would have to leave them room to get to the traffic light either.

I will see what I can do about verifying that--i thought it was some kind of medical practice.

Also, I don't know how feasible it would be, but the VW factory has a pretty huge parking lot as well, and it's nearly empty on the weekends.

There is definitely a church renting that K-mart on Sundays. Can't speak for Saturdays.

I drove by there yesterday (Sunday) afternoon and it was deserted. I go past there often and it is almost always empty except for the occasional 18 wheeler catching a nap. There is some church outfit that uses it Sunday AM, but Saturday could be a possibility. There is a great big for sale sign out front so it might be temporary. There is a Zaxby's and a small medical office on the right side of the lot, but flagging a section and not disturbing those businesses seems do-able, especially considering the effort needed at Eastgate. Lots of visibility from Hwy 58.

Due to the nature of our company's business I have to work alternating Saturdays. I'm sure a few others do as well. I would MUCH rather have an event than not (even if I have to miss them on occasion), but we might see attendance drop if we had events on Saturdays.

On the other hand we might pull some of the church crowd that otherwise would have never been out, so it may not matter. We definately need to jump on the first thing that works at this point in my opinion. Thanks to everyone who is putting in work on this! I am in Cleveland and have looked both in person and on google maps but have not come across a suitable location even worth investigating further.

Regarding HWY 58 lot. Yes, it is now owned by a church. I know the pastor and he is open for Saturday use. We have our Scenic City Cruizers yearly charity car show there. There are some challenges there but we may be able to remove some of the curb obstacles and such if the pastor will let us. Great visibility location. Some light poles and we will have to figure out how to control access and keep lanes open for access to the Zaxby's. It is as good an option we have and better than many. Let me know if you are interested in pursuing and I can work on getting with the pastor for next step discussions. Hope this is helpful.

I ran there once (many years ago) with PCA. Asphalt quality was fine at the time, as I recall. The lot wasn't big, but it offered good grid and paddock areas.

Old KMart on 58 has a church and a dialysis clinic. The clinic is m-f and the church is Sunday. Saturday should be an option here.
Points of concern with this lot. The far left exit(viewed from the lot) to 58 says no right turn. We would have to leave access for zaxbys traffic to the right had exit which is no left turn. There are parking curbs as well as light poles which will also shrink the space.

I have recently become interested in what SCCA is all about locally, but unfortunately the weather or loss of venue I have not been able to observe your Club. I have been following your lot search and if I may make a suggestion. The Omega Center International, 410 Urbane Rd NE, Cleveland,TN may have a lot large enough for your activities plus additional but separate area for pits. From the road this does not look like much but in the rear of the visible parking area is a very large unobstructed paved parking area. Our motorcycle group used this in the past and had two separate Riders courses running simultaneously without either interfering with the other. The people that run the center where very accommodating with setting schedules and such, sorry I cannot recall the contact info. Hope this helps,I would like to see some SOLO/Autocross activity locally.

Good find - thanks for making us aware of another possible option!

Can someone run the dimensions on that lot? I can't do it on this computer. Its not far from Justin and I, I'm sure one of us could run and take pictures within the next few days. It looks to be slightly smaller than the jetport, but if grid can be done in another lot it might just be enough to make something happen. Since the Jetport pad had to accommodate grid, trailer and several "safety zones" (taxiway) we lost a substantial amount of usable space there anyway. It looks like at this lot the trailer could be parked off to the side of the usable area, grid could be done in the lot to the east or behind the building. It looks like the lot gives lots of different options for start/finish as well.

Plus its actually closer to my house than the jetport... ;)

Is the Omega Center a church? Meaning are they using the lot on Sundays?

Also, do you know what the rental price was to your motorcycle club?
